Welcome to this month’s Notable & Quotable! This month’s N&Q comes from Fires that Forge, Book I in the Lords of Order & Chaos Series.
A complete absence of light engulfed them in an instant. He felt the demon enter the top of his spine and scorch its way along each nerve of his body. His eyes burned as if he was consumed by a killing fever, and the fallen champion moved to the helm of his mind. The demon found the inner self, a small boy with tortured feet, kneeling in the center of this human’s intellect. This would be easy. The boy whimpered as the creature strode up behind and seized him by the top of the head. The demon jerked the boy’s head back and then recoiled in surprise and horror. The bangs of the young boy’s hair hung over a bloody chasm. The flesh of his neck and cheeks lay slack; trailing into that same cursed hole.
I killed that boy many years ago, the human said/thought from behind Shezmu. I mastered and killed him. Now I will master you.
